ImageThe Truth about Lie Angles
By Richard Rhodes

This is the most important club specification affecting direction. Lie angle is referred to as being upright or flat.

It is the angle measured from the back of the hosel to the ground.  The farther the hosel is from the ground the more upright it is.

FACT: If your lie angle is off by two degrees your ball will be influenced off line by 22 feet. A four degree error will send the ball 44 feet off line!!!

So, if your lie angle is four degrees too flat this will cause your ball to be 44 feet to the slice side of the target, assuming you make a good swing directly down the target line. If your lie angle is two degrees too upright the ball will influenced 22 feet to the hook side etc.

If the lie of your clubs is out then what you end up doing is making compensations in your swing to get the ball to go where you want it to. This will make it extremely difficult to be consistent and get the most from your game.

Think about the shots you hit ... If you thought you hit a good one and it went right (most common for right hander's) then there is a very good chance your lie angles are out.

    Next - Fitting Irons

Fitting Irons - Fitted clubs produce fitting results

Test results show that when hitting a 6 iron, a 1" off-centre hit can produce up to an 8% loss of distance. A club too short can produce fading shots, a club too long tends to pull. Adjustments to club length change flex and weight. We also stock a large range of premium shafts that can be fitted to your drivers and irons.

Shaft Flex balanced to your Swing Speed and Tempo

The faster you swing a club, the firmer or the heavier shaft is usually required. The load on the shaft during the downswing creates the flex in the shaft.

A shaft that is too stiff will mostly result in a short or faded shot, while a club with too much flex will hook or spray the shot.

Only your professional club fitter can find the balance in shaft flex. The backswing - downswing combination is where the energy is created, to be released immediately resulting in increased club head speed and correct alignment on impact.

And then there is the flex-point or kick-point of the shaft, defining low or high trajectory for ball flight.

Club Face Parallel to the Ground

Lie is the angle between the shaft and the sole of the club. With your shaft length correct, the wrong lie angle will result in either the ball going left or right of your intended direction.

Add to this head weight, weight distribution, head materials & design, swing weight and total weight we are getting closer to a complete golf club. Tuning your loft angle is a minor adjustment done when everything else is considered.

    Grip Thickness

Unable to release all your power? This may a symptom of incorrect grip size. A grip too thick can limit your ability to release the wrists during impact while a grip too thin can cause an early release. A 'neutral" grip will enable you to get the club face square to target during impact.

    Next - Club Selection

New Golf Club SetClub Selection - What's in your bag?

Now that you have your first fitted club, what do you put in your bag? With the advent of fairway drivers and the fact that most golfers are not confident with long irons, a good range is a 5 iron up to Sand Wedge.

This biggest part of the fitting process is iron selection.

Most golfers are not comfortable hitting long irons, a preference being from the huge selection of fairway drivers and lofted woods available.

    Wedge Fitting

ImageThis is the most complicated part of the fitting process. Fitting of wedges includes how much "bounce" you have on the sole of your sand or lob wedge. Generally, you would want more bounce on your sand wedge in order to play from sand bunkers, and how you hit your wedges from the fairway would indicate how much bounce is required in that club.

    Driver Fitting

Consider how far you hit the ball. Now, how far do you really hit the ball? Like irons, fitting the correct driver club length is very important but the correct launch angle could give you up to 40 extra yards.

If you have a tendency to hit your drivers off-centre this could be a symptom of incorrect shaft length. A dramatic loss of distance is usually the result.

Different drivers launch the ball at different angles and what works for one brand of club may not translate to another. It is important to spend some time hitting balls.
